Sean Rogers B&W Recipe

Device – iPhone 5
Version – 7.0.4
App Used – Aviary

In this photo, I used the pre-installed camera app to take the photograph in black and white mode. I used a desk lamp to get the lighting of the photograph to slightly cast a shadow behind my head onto the wall and couch. I then opened up the photograph in Aviary (a free app).

Immediately I raised the contrast using the app. My aim was to adjust it just enough so that the pattern printed on the couch popped out. In regular lighting, the pattern is very light and is not very prominent, therefore I wanted to make sure it was visible in my photograph. I also adjusted the grain of the photograph in order to bring out some of the details that would have gone unnoticed.

I took this photograph while hanging out with my roommates in our living room. I liked the balance that the clock created above my roommate, and wanted to take a photograph there myself for my self-portrait assignment.
