POW Image #4
The iPhone 5s with iOS 7 was used
to take this photo. I used the Camera+ (version 5.0.1) app to edit.
While on vacation in Kona, Hawaii, I was walking along this pathway and happened to look up at the treetops and see this particular tree. I really admired Hawaii’s trees, plants and animals because I’m so used to seeing Pennsylvania’s. I thought as though this tree looked like it should have belonged in a desert, especially after I converted it to black and white. It was a beautiful sunny day when I took this photo and the lighting was just perfect. I used the simple technique of just changing the photo from color to black and white. The black and white brings out the beauty because I believe more detail can be seen. I have always loved drawing, sculpting and taking photographs of trees. Especially in photos, I try to capture to magnificence of them. I want the viewer to want to look up and appreciate the beauty that the earth holds. This photo makes me want to climb to the top of that tree and look out across the landscapes. The contrast of the white branches and black leaves against the grey sky really makes the entire tree pop out. There’s just something about trees that gets to me. I’m not sure exactly what it is but something about their shape, majesty, intricacy and symbolism draws me to them.
