Rita Kraynak B&W Recipe, Sunny Clouds

 Device: iPhone 5
Version: iOS 7.0.4
App Used: Afterlight, Version 2.2

For this assignment, I took each picture initially in color through the camera app on the iPhone. After taking the picture, I opened it in Afterlight to see the different options for a black and white filter. Some weren't as dark with brighter exposure, others were just "original" black and white, some were a little bit darker. For this particular picture, I chose "original" black and white and played a lot with the contrast, exposure, highlights, etc.

After changing it to black and white, I went immediately to the contrast. I began with a low contrast so I could see the difference in the brightness of the clouds. I changed the brightness to make the clouds and the silhouettes of the houses darker. I liked the mystery behind the blackened out buildings. I also slightly altered the exposure and made it a little bit darker to enhance the the brightness of the sun and the darkness of the clouds.

The picture was taken as I was driving from my mom's house. I happened to look to my left and the clouds were just in a spectacular pattern. There was no way I wasn't going to take a picture. I knew there was no way that the beauty of the clouds in person would be captured in the picture, but turning it into a black and white photo helped to add mystery and an ominous feeling to it.
