All photos I shot for the B&W topic were from within the
default Galaxy camera which is 13MP. While impressive, the camera on this
device does have a lot of limitations, one which I found to be a problem were
the basic coloring options. There is no default Black and White, only Grayscale
which I found to be an issue when I wanted to capture high contrast photos. For
this particular photo I did not the default Grayscale setting but later edited
the photo with the Google+ app.
Setting up this photo took a great deal of effort and
thought. I wanted to capture a unique self-portrait that wasn’t simply my face.
I choose my kitchen setting at mid-day because the light that comes through the
blinds often creates great shadows and the room is not too bright. I left the room
itself as it was because I did not want to disturb the natural setting. In order to shoot my full silhouette, I set a
box on the floor and few feet from the kitchen entrance which my phone could
lean on. I then set my camera to grayscale and put a timer on of 10 seconds. To
get the photo I had to activate the shot, lean the phone on against the box
then quickly go sit within the camera’s range. Needless to say there was a lot of
trial and error. The camera moved a lot and would reset back to default color
settings often – these factors worked in my favor. I believed the slight angle
of this photo made it very interesting but it was captured in color.
I then moved to the Google+ app to alter the coloring. This also involved
a bit of trial and error. Ultimately, I choose to use Google’s Warmth filters.
These allow you to add sight tones to your photo graphs. I choose the very
first warmth setting then reduced the strength from +45 to +26. I found that this suppressed any colors
within the photo and added a very nice tone.
