Techniques: In order to generate this photgraph, I used the built in camera on my Android phone and and chose the black and white setting. In order to create such a strong contrast between black and white, I made sure the setting sun was positioned directly behind my subject.
Strategies: Since the setting sun in the background was so bright, there was such a strong contrast between my lights and darks in the photo. Therefore I did not see it necessary to adjust the conrast in the photograph myself. I wanted the photo to possess a sense of mystery by creating the figure in my photo to be a silhouette. I also thought this would help to make the bright white smoke pop against the dark silhouette.
Recipe: I took this photo while I was in the car with my boyfriend. It was the late afternoon and the sun was beginning to set, so I knew that the lighting would be perfect. My boyfriend was smoking his E cigaeette , which has smoke that is water vapor. The rich, dense smokey water vapor was such a bold contrast against the shadows cast by the bright sun behind the figure.
